Introduction

Over the last 2,000 years the elevation of the creeds and confessions to an equal (or higher) standard than God’s Word has produced eschatologies and doctrines that affect the whole of the faith, without the substance of their words being found in the scriptures. The denial of the finished work of Christ in the second coming, the resurrection of the saints and the reality of the new heavens and earth has warped the message of scripture, casts doubt on the inspiration and authority of scripture, and most assuredly robs Christ of the glory of His finished work. It seems to me to be one of the most grave of all the errors we face today and is producing a lot of bad fruit in this world.

I came to the conclusions of total fulfillment of all prophesy by reading my Bible alone, and didn’t know what Full Preterism was or anyone who believed it. What I saw in scripture was consistent and undeniable in a way I had never seen before. Prior to this I didn’t understand where the eschatology I had been taught was found in scripture. Those positions (mainly Amilenialism, then briefly Dispensationalism, and then Partial Preterism) were full of contradictions that left me without any ability to speak the truth, defend the faith or truly understand and believe it for myself.

Full Preterism seeks to consistently apply the hermeneutical principles that allow scripture to interpret scripture, and get back to the theology (namely the eschatology) of the authors of scripture, thus there is nothing really ‘new’ about Full Preterism other than the name itself. A great many theologians of the past would agree with the vast majority of what I have written below, but haven’t wanted to err from the creeds and confessions, showing who their real masters were.

Scripture is the only source of truth

The message of all of scripture hinges on the truth that Christ finished His work in the salvation – the resurrection of the Old Testament saints condemned to death –  so whosoever will may take and eat of Christ and live. That finished work was promised at the fall, and is found throughout the scriptures. It was prophesied by the prophets, written about in the Psalms and is found in the types and shadows of the OT. It was proclaimed by Christ Himself in great detail during His ministry and repeated by His Disciples and Apostles in the rest of the NT. It was prophesied in great symbolic detail to John in the Apocalypse. In short it is the very essence of scripture itself and the golden chain that binds all of scripture together.

The very fact that scripture is entirely consistent and coherent with each other is the very foundation we stand upon and our faith rests upon. To disbelieve any of these authors, or to claim that any of them misunderstood the message they spoke, or anticipated the end sooner than they should have is to throw out the entirety of the message of scripture, it’s reliability and authority over us.

Paul told Titus that an overseer must…

Titus‬ ‭1‬:‭9‬

…hold firmly to the faithful word as it was taught, so that he can encourage others by sound teaching and refute those who contradict it.

Titus‬ ‭1‬:‭9‬

…hold firmly to the faithful word as it was taught, so that he can encourage others by sound teaching and refute those who contradict it.

Titus‬ ‭1‬:‭9‬

…hold firmly to the faithful word as it was taught, so that he can encourage others by sound teaching and refute those who contradict it.

John‬ ‭10‬:‭37‬-‭38‬

If I am not doing the works of My Father, then do not believe Me. But if I am doing them, even though you do not believe Me, believe the works themselves, so that you may know and understand that the Father is in Me, and I am in the Father.

John‬ ‭10‬:‭37‬-‭38‬

If I am not doing the works of My Father, then do not believe Me. But if I am doing them, even though you do not believe Me, believe the works themselves, so that you may know and understand that the Father is in Me, and I am in the Father.

John‬ ‭10‬:‭37‬-‭38‬

If I am not doing the works of My Father, then do not believe Me. But if I am doing them, even though you do not believe Me, believe the works themselves, so that you may know and understand that the Father is in Me, and I am in the Father.

We inevitably read the scriptures in a modern way, and so we misunderstand so much of what was being taught. Add to this that we have translation issues that get in the way, for example the words ‘Sheol’ and ‘Hades’ which were translated away in our English bibles according to modern confessional tradition, until recently. As far back as Wycliffe (1382) those two words that have an almost consistently specific meaning ‘the place of the dead ones’ was translated as ‘death, the grave, the pit, hell, the lowest hell, hell and destruction, the depth’. All of these translations have modern day meanings which obscure and confuse the real meaning of the text.

Furthermore in the churches there is a shocking lack of consistency in the hermeneutical principles applied as we read and interpret scripture. Most teachers and theologians of all the major eschatological positions apply their hermeneutics only until it contradicts the creeds and confessions, and then they throw the hermeneutic out the window for eisegesis. We have been trained to read our Bible’s in this way, just avoiding the problematic texts or barely noticing them at all. For years I read the time statements of Christ and the Apostles completely out of the context they were written in, and separated from the people they were written to. When Paul says ‘you’ I read this as applying to me without a second thought. Once someone pointed out to me that Jesus was speaking to first-century Jews, Paul was writing to first-century Gentiles and Jews, and the John was writing to the seven churches in Asia I never saw scripture the same again. How I missed it for so long is beyond me!

A consistent hermeneutic must be applied to all of scripture. Who was it written to and when? Who the words spoken to? What’s the context of the time and the passage? When we come to a passage we should allow scripture to interpret it with other scripture. I see these principles so often applied only when we want to, or when it fits our tradition, but as soon as it presents us with a problem they are abandoned and liberty is taken to apply it whichever way helps us maintain our ‘orthodoxy’.

This is particularly apparent with eschatology. If we are applying a consistent hermeneutic we have no need to disregard the time statements of Christ and the Apostles. We are able to deal with them head on and see them as accurate, consistent and as infallible as the rest of scripture, backed up by historical accounts in a way no other ‘holy’ book can ever match.

The jumbled mess of futurist eschatology has serious misunderstandings on several foundational aspects of all of scripture, for example:

  • The death that Adam died

  • The death that Christ died

  • The nature and timing of the resurrection

  • The nature of the bride of Christ the true Israel

The Apostles were led into all truth by the Spirit

John‬ ‭14‬:‭25‬-‭26‬ ‭

All this I have spoken to you while I am still with you. But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have told you.

John‬ ‭14‬:‭25‬-‭26‬ ‭

All this I have spoken to you while I am still with you. But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have told you.

John‬ ‭14‬:‭25‬-‭26‬ ‭

All this I have spoken to you while I am still with you. But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have told you.

If we believe Christ’s words in John 14 and 16 – that he would send the Spirit to lead them into all truth, tell them of the future and remind them of Christ’s words and give them understanding of those words – then we must believe that the Apostles, and Christ Himself were absolutely accurate and precise in their statements in the rest of the NT, including the time statements and sequence of events. If there is any error, or doubt that what they expected never took place when they expected it then most assuredly the spirit must have failed to teach them all truth, or worse Christ would be a false prophet.

The Time Statements

There are over 100 time statements that indicate the imminent return of Christ in the NT, and to explain them away seems to me to be a major error, and puts us on very slippery ground in trying to understand what they actually do mean.

Matthew‬ ‭16‬:‭28‬, Mark 9:1, Luke 9:27

Truly I tell you, some who are standing here will not taste death before they see the Son of Man coming in His kingdom.

Matthew‬ ‭16‬:‭28‬, Mark 9:1, Luke 9:27

Luke‬ ‭21‬:‭20‬-‭28‬

But when you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies, you will know that her desolation is near. Then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains, let those in the city get out, and let those in the country stay out of the city. For these are the days of vengeance, to fulfill all that is written. How miserable those days will be for pregnant and nursing mothers! For there will be great distress upon the land and wrath against this people. They will fall by the edge of the sword and be led captive into all the nations. And Jerusalem will be trodden down by the Gentiles, until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled. There will be signs in the sun and moon and stars, and on the earth dismay among the nations, bewildered by the roaring of the sea and the surging of the waves. Men will faint from fear and anxiety over what is coming upon the earth, for the powers of the heavens will be shaken. At that time they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. When these things begin to happen, stand up and lift up your heads, because your redemption is drawing near.

2 Peter‬ ‭3‬:‭11‬-‭13‬

Since everything will be destroyed in this way, what kind of people ought you to be? You ought to conduct yourselves in holiness and godliness as you anticipate and hasten the coming of the day of God, when the heavens will be destroyed by fire and the elements will melt in the heat. But in keeping with God’s promise, we are looking forward to a new heaven and a new earth, where righteousness dwells.

Everyone who does not listen to Him will be completely cut off from among his people.’ Indeed, all the prophets from Samuel on, as many as have spoken, have proclaimed these days. And you are sons of the prophets and of the covenant God made with your fathers when He said to Abraham, ‘Through your offspring all the families of the earth will be blessed.’ When God raised up His Servant, He sent Him first to you to bless you by turning each of you from your wicked ways.

The death that Adam died

Adam and Eve were created mortal, as they had to eat from the Tree of Life to live forever. When they were cast out of Eden they lost access to that tree, and thus they lost access to eternal life with God. Christ’s atonement was their way and our way to receive eternal life. They died that day because of sin, but clearly it wasn’t a biological death as they continued to live. They died in a spiritual sense that caused physical separation immediately, and led to ‘the death’ which is the curse upon all who have sinned. They were cast out of the garden and could not eat from the tree of life. Therefore they would die biologically one day, and at death they could not go to be with God until ‘the sin’ was atoned for. As a result they went to Sheol (Hades) at biological death, and waited for the redemption of their souls and bodies. They were naked in both a physical and spiritual sense and would need to be ‘clothed upon’ with immortality in their new bodies. The animal skins they were clothed with symbolised that immortality through the sacrificial lamb of Christ who was to come. Christ had to both die, and descend into (and rise out of) Hades to break the power of the death. It seems that the animal whose skin they wore died in their place that day.

Hebrews‬ ‭2‬:‭14‬-‭16‬

Now since the children have flesh and blood, He too shared in their humanity, so that by His death He might destroy him who holds the power of death, that is, the devil, and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by their fear of death. For surely it is not the angels He helps, but the descendants of Abraham.

Where did the OT believers go at death?

The OT saints went to Sheol (Hades in Greek) at death, because they were under the curse of the law of sin and death. They needed to be atoned for by Christ’s death and resurrected from the death (from Sheol) to have access to the father again.

Isaiah‬ ‭38‬:‭9‬-‭11‬ ‭

A poem by King Hezekiah of Judah after he had been sick and had recovered from his illness: I said: In the prime of my life I must go to the gates of Sheol; I am deprived of the rest of my years. I said: I will never see the Lord, the Lord in the land of the living; I will not look on humanity any longer with the inhabitants of what is passing away.

‭‭Acts‬ ‭2‬:‭29‬-‭35‬ ‭

Brothers, I can tell you with confidence that the patriarch David died and was buried, and his tomb is with us to this day. But he was a prophet and knew that God had promised him on oath that He would place one of his descendants on his throne. Foreseeing this, David spoke about the resurrection of the Christ, that He was not abandoned to Hades, nor did His body see decay. God has raised this Jesus to life, to which we are all witnesses. Exalted, then, to the right hand of God, He has received from the Father the promised Holy Spirit and has poured out what you now see and hear. For David did not ascend into heaven, but he himself says: ‘The Lord said to my Lord, “Sit at My right hand until I make Your enemies a footstool for Your feet.”’

All these people died in faith, without having received the things they were promised. However, they saw them and welcomed them from afar. What is the great hope of the believer at death?

You insist that it is the resurrection of physical bodies and the re-making of this physical earth, but this is not what the scriptures teach. The hope of the believer is with the father and son in heaven for all eternity. It exists right now, for anyone who is in Christ.

The desire for a physical remade earth, a physical body are the same desires the Jews of Jesus’s day had. They rejected the spiritual, heavenly fulfillment of the promises in favor of the physical. Why is being with the Father, Son and Spirit in heaven not good enough?

The promises were heavenly, not earthly

One of the consequences of these misunderstandings is the desire of futurists for a physical, earthly fulfillment of heavenly promises, eg:

  • Physical, visible (every eye) coming of Christ

  • Physical resurrected bodies

  • New heavens and earth on this earth

  • Physical Israel, temple (Dispensationalism)

These are the same aspirations as the Jews who rejected Jesus. They desired all the physical, earthly fulfillments when Christ offered them better things in the spirit and in heaven. Even the disciples took a while to understand the nature of the fulfillment of the promises they were so familiar with.

Their eternal inheritance was in the heavenly temple with Father, Son and Spirit.

If it were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and welcome you into My presence, so that you also may be where I am.

Christ’s return would be visible only to His people. To the rest it would be only a visible judgement – coming on the clouds of heaven.

The signs of the end

The birth-pain signs that Christ described were the very same signs seen in the first century during the Jewish persecution before the Jewish-Roman war broke out, and the subsequent events described in detail were seen during that war.

The end of the age coincided with the end of the old covenant, the marriage supper, the resurrection and the judgement

As the prophets foretold, it would be at the time of Messiah that the resurrection and judgement (the harvest, the marriage supper of the Lamb) would take place in close succession when Israel, Jerusalem and the Old Covenant was torn down.

He would be with the Apostles in the form of the Holy Spirit until the end of the age when they would enter the heavenly temple and be face-to-face with Him again.

The resurrection

The resurrection was of the dead ones who were in Sheol, awaiting the redemption and immortality (to righteousness or destruction). A great majority of them had died under the law and so enter Sheol at death, and so in 1 Corinthians 15 Paul has to re-iterate the truth that those OT saints would live again. The question was never whether the living saints and those who died in Christ would be raised – they already were raised with Christ – they had been taught that clearly by the Apostles.

1 Corinthians‬ ‭15‬:‭13‬ ‭

If there is no resurrection of the dead, then not even Christ has been raised.

1 Corinthians‬ ‭15‬:‭13‬ ‭

If there is no resurrection of the dead, then not even Christ has been raised.

1 Corinthians‬ ‭15‬:‭13‬ ‭

If there is no resurrection of the dead, then not even Christ has been raised.

If there was no resurrection then they would be trapped in Sheol forever, along with Christ (for he descended before he ascended). Christ was born under the law just like those OT saints.

‬ ‭‭Galatians‬ ‭4‬:‭4‬-‭5‬

But when the time had fully come, God sent His Son, born of a woman, born under the law, to redeem those under the law, that we might receive our adoption as sons.

‬ ‭‭Galatians‬ ‭4‬:‭4‬-‭5‬

But when the time had fully come, God sent His Son, born of a woman, born under the law, to redeem those under the law, that we might receive our adoption as sons.

‬ ‭‭Galatians‬ ‭4‬:‭4‬-‭5‬

But when the time had fully come, God sent His Son, born of a woman, born under the law, to redeem those under the law, that we might receive our adoption as sons.

But of course Christ did rise, and so they would also rise into the heavenly realm at the end of the millennium (AD 66).

But Christ has indeed been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep.

1 Corinthians‬ ‭15‬:‭20‬

But Christ has indeed been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep.

Hosea‬ ‭6‬:‭11‬

Also for you, O Judah, a harvest is appointed, when I restore My people from captivity.

Hosea‬ ‭6‬:‭11‬

Also for you, O Judah, a harvest is appointed, when I restore My people from captivity.

Hosea‬ ‭6‬:‭11‬

Also for you, O Judah, a harvest is appointed, when I restore My people from captivity.

This is the harvest motif, it is the resurrection of the dead ones into their eternal dwelling places. In fact Christ was already prepared for the harvest as soon as his ministry began as he began to bring condemnation on apostate Israel.

His winnowing fork is in His hand to clear His threshing floor and to gather His wheat into the barn; but He will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.

The Pharisees held to various interpretations of the resurrection of the body, but they were inextricably tied to the fulfillment of the physical land of Israel. Paul was moved by the Spirit to mention his hope of the resurrection in front of the Sanhedrin as a way out of that corrupt court and get safe passage to Rome. He was under no illusion that the Pharisees had the same resurrection as he did, as evidenced by them trying to kill him days later for his belief in the resurrection! Evidently they were enraged that Paul was teaching a resurrection by the power of Jesus of Nazareth of a spiritual body in a spiritual kingdom that signaled the end of Israel’s privileges.

Psalm‬ ‭102‬:‭18‬-‭22‬ ‭

Let this be written for the generation to come, so that a people not yet created may praise the Lord. Acts 24:14-15

But I confess this to you, that according to the Way which they call a sect, so I serve the God of our fathers, believing all things throughout the Law and that have been written in the Prophets, having a hope in God, which they themselves also await, that there is about to be a resurrection, both of the just and of the unjust.

What about Hymenaeus and Philetus?

2 Timothy‬ ‭2‬:‭16‬-‭18‬ ‭

But avoid irreverent, empty chatter, which will only lead to more ungodliness, and the talk of such men will spread like gangrene. Among them are Hymenaeus and Philetus, who have deviated from the truth. They say that the resurrection has already occurred, and they undermine the faith of some.

Paul is writing around AD 63, a few years before the resurrection in 66. He is stating concretely that the event had not yet happened. If it had then the implication would is that the believers had missed it. This would have been a real concern to some, as they understood that it would happen “as a thief in the night”.

If, according to your belief the resurrection was an event in which physical bodies came out of the graves at the time of the world burning up and a worldwide judgement then would Paul really need to debunk a supposed already passed resurrection? Wouldn’t it be so incredibly obvious that it would not even need to be given space in his letter?

The resurrection body and why it differs from Christ’s physical resurrection

Unlike Adam and Eve Christ was immortal, therefore He was not able to die. Because He had never sinned he was never subject to ‘the death’. He laid His life down of His own will, and he freely rose again by His own power. Because He was sinless His body was never corrupted by sin (and He rose before His body could begin to decay because it was impossible for Him to suffer decay), therefore He could take His own body back, scars and all to ascend into heaven with it. We require immortal, sinless bodies to enter heaven, therefore we have to leave these mortal, sinful bodies in the earth as they return to dust.

1 Corinthians‬ ‭15‬:‭37‬-‭38‬

And what you sow is not the body that will be, but just a seed, perhaps of wheat or something else. But God gives it a body as He has designed, and to each kind of seed He gives its own body.

1 Corinthians‬ ‭15‬:‭37‬-‭38‬

And what you sow is not the body that will be, but just a seed, perhaps of wheat or something else. But God gives it a body as He has designed, and to each kind of seed He gives its own body.

1 Corinthians‬ ‭15‬:‭42‬-‭49‬ ‭‬

So will it be with the resurrection of the dead: What is sown is perishable; it is raised imperishable. It is sown in dishonor; it is raised in glory. It is sown in weakness; it is raised in power. It is sown a natural body; it is raised a spiritual body. If there is a natural body, there is also a spiritual body. So it is written: “The first man Adam became a living being;” the last Adam a life-giving spirit. The spiritual, however, was not first, but the natural, and then the spiritual. The first man was of the dust of the earth, the second man from heaven. As was the earthly man, so also are those who are of the earth; and as is the heavenly man, so also are those who are of heaven. And just as we have borne the likeness of the earthly man, so also shall we bear the likeness of the heavenly man.

1 Corinthians‬ ‭15‬:‭42‬-‭49‬ ‭‬

The fact that we will be like Christ in His resurrection body is not to do with us getting our bodies back, but all about Him being immortal and perfectly righteous! Of course we shall be like Him, otherwise how would we ever enter the presence of the Father?

New heavens and earth at the culmination of the age

Under the Old Covenant the heavens and earth had been symbolised in the temple (heavens) and land or nation of Israel (earth). That covenant would become obsolete at the cross, yet continued to fade away until the associated heaven and earth (Temple and nation) would be completely dissannulled. Christ had become the High Priest forever, and the eternal kingdom had fully come by AD 70.

For Moses said, ‘The Lord your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among your brothers. You must listen to Him in everything He tells you. And you are sons of the prophets and of the covenant God made with your fathers when He said to Abraham, ‘Through your offspring all the families of the earth will be blessed.’ When God raised up His Servant, He sent Him first to you to bless you by turning each of you from your wicked ways.

For Moses said, ‘The Lord your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among your brothers. You must listen to Him in everything He tells you.

Matthew‬ ‭5‬:‭17‬-‭18‬ ‭

Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets. I have not come to abolish them, but to fulfill them. For I tell you truly, until heaven and earth pass away, not a single jot, not a stroke of a pen, will disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished.

Acts‬ ‭7‬:‭44‬, ‭47‬-‭50

Our fathers had the tabernacle of the Testimony with them in the wilderness. It was constructed exactly as God had directed Moses, according to the pattern he had seen…But it was Solomon who built the house for Him. However, the Most High does not dwell in houses made by human hands. As the prophet says: ‘Heaven is My throne and the earth is My footstool. What kind of house will you build for Me, says the Lord, or where will My place of repose be? Has not My hand made all these things?

This is the glorious age when the kingdom will forever increase and all the glory and honor goes to Father, Son and Spirit. We are not living under the Old Covenant for it has passed away.
